On Tuesday, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Social Justice and Empowerment, Ramdas Athawale, visited Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh, where he attended a Sant Kabir Satsang. He also made some major comments on some of the national issues like caste based census, religious conversions, language politics, and the upcoming visit of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

Speaking on the caste census, Athawale termed it a historic and long-awaited move being accomplished due to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He faulted the Congress party for not making such a decision when they had been in power persistently after being asked about it. The General Commission will now ensure that it determines the level of development, welfare, and benefits that are given to different communities, as Athawale added.

On the language problem, especially in Maharashtra, Athawale stressed the necessity of Hindi as the mother language of the country. But he also agreed with the decision of the Maharashtra government, which permitted the teaching of Marathi where it was required. He proposed that though Hindi was to be encouraged at schools, the regional languages had to be encouraged until Class 6 Class 1.

Athawale took a hard stand against the increasing instances of religious conversion in the state of Chhattisgarh. He said that forceful and pressured conversions are not acceptable. Although everyone has the right to convert to the religion of his/her choice, he emphasised that the conversion of an individual through force or enticement must be discouraged through proper investigation.

Athawale, responding to the suggestion of the July 7 visit of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in Chhattisgarh, said, “In a democracy, anyone is free to hold religious meetings. Kharge is a part of our constituency, and we accept him. But we are sure that he will go up to bat against Modi and say that the Constitution is under threat. Congress can comment as much as they want but now the people have pierced their politics.”

Athawale also made a harsh jibe at the Mamata Banerjee-led regime in West Bengal.
