Several tremors were witnessed in the Andaman Sea on Monday, with three earthquakes being witnessed in the region in a little over two hours, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said. The seismic process occurred at 10:09 am in the form of a 4.7 magnitude earthquake, then at 11:22 am with a second tremor of 4.7 magnitude, and finally at 12:06 pm with a third tremor of 4.7 magnitude. The depth of all three earthquakes was 10 kilometres.
NCS also shared the information about the occurrence of the second quake on social media, saying:
Version: EQ of M: 4.6, On: 30/06/2025 11:22:23 IST, On: Lat 9.45 N Long 93.93 E Depth 10 Km Location Andaman Sea.
A similar depth was recorded on a preceding temblor earlier in the day on the same date at 10.09 am, and this also had a magnitude of 4.7. The proximity of the earthquakes is a cause of concern to both the people on the land and to the experts, since so far there have been no reports of destruction or loss of life.
The Andaman Sea region is highly prone to earthquakes, since it has been categorised into Seismic Zone V, which is the most prone to earthquakes in India. This region is located on the Alpine-Himalayan seismic belt, which is one of the most active tectonic sites worldwide that extends along the Mediterranean area, the Himalayas, and to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Only a few days ago, on the 25th of June, an earthquake of magnitude 4.2 was experienced on the region at 1:43 am depth of 20 kilometres. There have been four moderate earthquakes in less than one week, and this has made the experts in seismic activities monitor the area keenly in case they trigger an even bigger event.
