KOLKATA: Kolkata Police have revealed that Monojit Mishra, the primary accused in the alleged gangrape of a 24-year-old law student at South Calcutta Law College, is a “history-sheeter” with a long string of past criminal charges. The shocking details emerged as the investigation into the horrific incident on June 25 continues, with police forming a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to expedite the probe.
According to police records, Mishra, a former student and contractual non-teaching staff at the college, has been chargesheeted in numerous incidents including harassment of women, assault, theft, and vandalism. Cases against him are reportedly registered across multiple police stations in Kolkata, including Kalighat, Kasba, Alipore, Haridevpur, and Tollygunge.
Among the specific past allegations, reports indicate that in 2019, Mishra was accused of ripping a woman’s clothes inside the South Calcutta Law College, leading to a chargesheet. In the same year, he faced theft charges for allegedly stealing items from a friend’s home. Further incidents include a harassment complaint in Kasba in March 2022 and, more recently in May 2024, the college administration itself filed a complaint against him for assaulting a security guard and vandalizing property on campus. While a 2017 accusation of damaging the principal’s office did not result in a formal police case, it adds to a disturbing pattern of behavior.
Mishra, 31, is also a practicing criminal lawyer at the Alipore court and was previously associated with the Trinamool Congress’s student wing, though the party has now distanced itself from him. Police sources suggest that the alleged gangrape occurred after the victim rejected Mishra’s marriage proposal, and investigators have recovered an incriminating 1.5-minute video clip from one of the accused’s mobile phones, which corroborates the victim’s complaint. Four individuals, including Mishra, two other students, and a security guard, have been arrested in connection with the case.
