On Friday, the BJP, former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, repeated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is determined to bring peace and to re-introduce a democratically chosen government in the troubled northeastern state of Manipur. Talking to reporters after a very important BJP meeting held at Thambal Sanglen in Imphal, which was chaired by state party president A. Sarda Devi, Singh pointed out that the party is not interested in the political battle but in ending the current crisis.
“And we are not battling with any political party. All we want to do is to restore peace and make sure a popular government is reinstated, which is really the will of the people,” said Singh. He observed that the law and order situation in Manipur has improved a lot, and no gunfiring cases were reported over the last eight to nine months. He has attributed the efforts of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is on a round-the-clock exercise of trying to normalise the situation.
Singh also criticised the increasing danger of illegal immigration in the region and drug trafficking. He said that the people are realising the negative consequences of illegal immigrants and drug trafficking to the Manipur state and the Northeast in general.
He maintained that the BJP has been pressurising the central leadership to get a better pace in assuring the creation of a representative government in the state. State BJP President A. Sarda Devi also echoed this by saying that the party has already made the needs of people with an elected government known to central leaders as well. She assured that the Centre will take forthwith needed constitutional steps.
Sarda said in reply to a question on internal harmony in the party that it could be determined only with time. But we think that tortoise beats the hare.”
She laid emphasis on the fact that now the priority is not elections but peace and stability. In response to Sambhidhan Hatya Diwas, Sarda blamed the Congress over the 1975 Emergency, terming it as a dark time.
