The expectations were quite high when Gautam Gambhir replaced the previous manager as India team head coach. Gambhir, famous by his attacking mentality and strategic skills, was considered the right person to take Indian cricket into the new zone. Where the performance in white-ball cricket has been quite impressive and most specifically when in the ICC Champions Trophy, the visitors won the cup earlier this year, the red-ball cricket performed quite pathetically.
India has a cause to worry about its recent performance in Test cricket. Things have not been going well since after losing two series to New Zealand and Australia with England, which has been on tour in England, further increasing the amount of pressure that is surrounding the team. On the first Test at Headingley, an Indian team led by Shubman Gill lost by five wickets in a match that stretched their bad streak under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir.
As usual, ex-India batsman Aakash Chopra did not mince words on his evaluation tactics stating that now Gambhir has to deliver with expectations riding high on his shoulders. When the performance is good the entire country rejoices. However, the moment that anything goes badly, criticism is bound to occur as said by Chopra in his YouTube channel. He also said that Gill should be allowed to adjust in his new position as the Test captain but Gambhir should provide the results with all means and facilities available.
In Tests, Gambhir also has a second alarming record as far as being the head coach is concerned. Their performance in the format under him has seen India win only single of their past nine games. The 3-0 whitewash in New Zealand and a 3-1 battering in the hands of the Pat Cummins Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy have brought attention to a team that could not seem to establish itself in the longer format. His reign has been the worst when India won only a Test series in his tenure against Bangladesh, a far-fetched scenario considering the previous Indian dominance in the sport.
