Kolkata: In a significant development in the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student at a south Kolkata college, police today arrested the security guard who was on duty during the horrifying incident. This marks the fourth arrest in the case that has sent shockwaves across the city and raised serious concerns about campus safety.

The arrested guard, identified as Pinaki Banerjee, was taken into custody after initial questioning revealed inconsistencies in his statements. Police sources indicated that Banerjee was allegedly instructed by the prime accused to leave his guard room, which was then used for the assault. Despite the victim’s alleged pleas for help, the guard reportedly failed to intervene or alert authorities. His presence during the alleged crime and subsequent inaction are currently under intense scrutiny.

Earlier, Kolkata Police had arrested three individuals in connection with the alleged gang-rape: Monojit Mishra (31), a staff member and former student of the college, and two students, Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20). The victim had bravely informed police that the accused recorded the assault on a mobile phone and threatened to upload the footage online if she spoke to anyone. The mobile phones of the arrested individuals have been seized for forensic examination.

To ensure a thorough and expedited investigation, Kolkata Police has formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT). A senior officer confirmed the formation of the SIT, emphasizing the seriousness with which the case is being handled. The alleged incident occurred on Wednesday evening, June 25, within the college premises in Kasba.

The alleged gang-rape has ignited widespread public outrage and political condemnation. Various organizations and political parties have demanded swift justice and stringent action against all those involved. The medical examination of the victim has reportedly corroborated her allegations, indicating injuries consistent with sexual assault. Police are continuing to gather evidence, including scrutinizing CCTV footage from the college, to piece together the full sequence of events and ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice.
