As per the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale hit the Andaman Sea on Saturday, June 27, 2025. The quake took place at 8.28 PM IST with a latitude of 9.75 N and longitude of 94.06 E, amounting to 254 kilometres southeast of the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Port Blair. Its origin depth was at 25 kilometres below the seabed.
NCS also posted these details of the seismic event on their official X (previously Twitter) account and read:
“intensity/ M: 4.6, time/ On 27/06/2025 20:28:18 IST, latitude/ 9.75 N and longitude/ 94.06 E, depth/ 25 km, and Loc/ Andaman Sea.”
Currently, no damages and casualties are reported in the area, and they are still monitoring the situation.
The tremor is the consequence of the 4.2 magnitude earthquake that hit the same area on June 25, emphasising the common tectonic events in the region of the Andaman Sea that falls under the seismically complex zone of the Indian Plate interacting with the Burma Microplate.
Over the past months, there have been a range of small earthquakes in India and other countries, sparking the issue of seismicity rates in the region. In the month of April, an earthquake of magnitude 3.4 intensity was felt in Mandi district in the state of Himachal Pradesh, and this was one of the four earthquakes that were experienced in less than one hour in India, Myanmar and Tajikistan. Those tremors caused panic in most towns and cities across Central and South Asia, but there was also no serious damage caused.
Scholars keep on advancing the virtues of preparedness and awareness, particularly in vulnerable areas such as the Himalayan belt and the Andaman-Nicobar region, owing to the unpredictability of seismic activity in those regions.
