A vending stall at Uslapur Railway Station took a different route of overcharging people on bottled water, and the railway administration has acted very strictly on this. According to the reports, the stall was also selling water bottles that are officially sold at 15 rupees at a price of 20 rupees, which is a straight violation of consumer rights and railway guidelines.
Some of the passengers had filed complaints with the railway officials, accusing them of overcharging them for basic amenities. On these complaints, the railway department sent its team to the vending stall in question to conduct a surprise inspection. In the inspection, it had been established that the stall was actually charging a premium of 20 on an item that is supposed to be retailed at the MRP of 15, which is a bottle of drinking water.
After adopting a firm stand on this malpractice, the railway administration promptly closed up the vending stall. According to the officials, the railway department is not to condone any form of exploitation of passengers, particularly on basic necessities such as drinking water.
Angling out the consumer rights is not only unethical but also destroys the reputation of the Indian Railways, whose motto is to offer free and fair services to every member of the travelling community. The authorities reinstated their position to adhere to the standard established for vendors doing business on the railway premises. They also urged people to go on reporting about cases of overcharging or bad treatment or any other form of misbehaviour on the part of sellers, promising strict and immediate action.
The case is a serious lesson to all the vendors in the railway stations in the country. The railway administration made it clear that it will be doing periodic checks and would not be afraid of taking stringent measures, including cancellation of contracts and sealing of stalls, so that adherence to the guidelines is observed to protect the interests of the passengers.
