NEW DELHI: The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has commenced the crucial analysis of black box data recovered from the crash site of Air India Flight AI171, which tragically crashed moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12. This formal investigation, launched in line with international protocols, aims to uncover the sequence of events that led to the fatal accident.
Both the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) were successfully recovered from the Ahmedabad crash site. One black box was located on a rooftop on June 13, and the other was found amidst the debris on June 16. Following their recovery, the devices were secured under stringent security measures, including round-the-clock police protection and CCTV surveillance, before being airlifted to Delhi by an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft on June 24.
According to a government statement released today, the “front black box” arrived at the AAIB lab in Delhi with the Director General (DG) of AAIB at 2:00 PM on June 24, with the “rear black box” arriving later that day. The AAIB, designated as the authority for such investigations, has assured the public that the probe is being conducted with utmost diligence and in full compliance with domestic laws and international obligations.
The CVR records audio within the cockpit, including pilot conversations, air traffic control communications, and ambient sounds, providing critical insights into the crew’s actions and the environment leading up to the crash. The FDR, on the other hand, records a multitude of aircraft parameters such as altitude, airspeed, engine performance, and flight control inputs, allowing investigators to reconstruct the aircraft’s trajectory and systems’ behavior. The successful retrieval and ongoing analysis of this data are pivotal steps in determining the cause of the Air India Flight AI171 crash and implementing measures to enhance aviation safety.
