Two passengers were killed and about 50 others injured in a tragic accident in the wee hours of Thursday morning when a double-decker bus turned turtle on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway close to the Saifai region of Uttar Pradesh. It met with an accident along Mandi village, and the bus was transporting around 80 passengers towards their destination of Delhi after leaving Bihar.
As highlighted by the police, the rushing bus attempted to cross a truck and consequently went out of control and slumped into a ditch on the side of the road. The crash led to panic among the passenger who were woken up out of their sleep due to its effects.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Brijesh Kumar Srivastava revealed that passersby in other vehicles immediately informed the local police and security officials on the highway. An urgent rescue effort was made, in collaboration, to bring the trapped passengers out of the crippled bus. The injured were evacuated by ambulances to Saifai Medical College Hospital, and the bodies of the deceased were shifted to the local mortuary to be examined by post-mortem.
The victims are recognized as Shaida, 22 years old of Bardah in Nepal, and 52-year-old Manoj Kumar of Rampur Deeha in Darbhanga district, Bihar. Hospital authorities said some of the injured are in a critical condition and are under intensive care.
The accident has brought about new fears about road safety and speeding on the national expressways. Investigations are underway over the incident, and the driving pattern of the bus driver is under review in a move to establish the real cause of the crash. Local authorities have also promised to take strict measures when negligence is verified.
The police and related emergency services are still stationed to wait as the family members of the victims have started to arrive at the hospital and at the area of the accident.
