India’s aviation regulator has ordered Air India to sack three of its staff following grave safety breaches that occurred after one of the company’s airplanes crashed in Ahmedabad. The accident has rocked both the country and the aviation sector itself as it involved the crash of an Air India Dreamliner (Boeing 787-8) bound to London soon after taking off at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12.
The plane crashed into a hostel complex at the BJ Medical College campus in the Meghani Nagar region of the state capital of Gujarat. Out of the 242 people on board, 241 were killed, including a senior political leader who was the former Chief Minister of Gujarat state, Vijay Rupani. Some people on the ground, too, were killed, bringing the death toll to 270.
To curb the disaster, India conducted a rapid search by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on the cause of the crash. The early results have pointed to the most significant failings in the procedure of operation and safety in flights. Consequently, the DGCA has directed Air India to sack 3 employees who are said to be directly to blame for these lapses.
In the meantime, there is still work (the victims are identified) to be done, as numerous bodies were either incinerated or mutilated. Gujarat Health Minister and the spokesman of the state government, Rushikesh Patel, said that DNA tests have played a pivotal role in the identification procedures. To date, 220 DNA samples have been matched, and families of those who died are being contacted. Mortal remains of 202 victims have already been provided to their relatives, he said.
The deceased people are 160 Indian nationals (151 passengers), 34 British citizens, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian. The terrible accident has once again raised the urgency of implementing higher degrees of aviation safety regulations and responsibility in the extremely vigorous airline sector in India.
