New Delhi: India’s “Operation Sindhu” to evacuate its citizens from conflict-hit Iran commenced successfully late Friday night, as a special evacuation flight carrying 290 Indian students landed safely at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. This marks the first major phase of the coordinated effort to bring back Indian nationals amidst escalating regional tensions.

The flight, primarily carrying students from Jammu and Kashmir, was facilitated after Iran made a special allowance to open its airspace for these humanitarian flights. The Indian Embassy in Tehran has been actively involved in relocating students from more volatile areas within Iran to safer zones, such as Mashhad, from where these evacuation flights are departing.

Two more chartered flights are expected to arrive in Delhi later on Saturday, further bolstering the evacuation efforts. One of these flights is slated to arrive from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, indicating the multi-faceted approach India is taking to ensure the safe passage of its citizens.

Operation Sindhu was launched earlier this week by the Ministry of External Affairs in response to the deteriorating situation and heightened hostilities in the region. The Indian government has reiterated its commitment to the safety and security of its nationals abroad, with officials working closely with Iranian authorities to streamline the evacuation process.

Prior to this major flight, a smaller group of 110 Indian students had already reached Delhi on Thursday, having been transited via Armenia and Doha. The ongoing operation aims to bring back an estimated 1,000 Indian nationals, primarily students, who are currently in Iran. The swift execution of Operation Sindhu reflects India’s robust crisis response capabilities and its dedication to protecting its diaspora.
