On his 55th birthday on Thursday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi moved into his new official address, a large Type8 bungalow at 5, Sunehri Bagh Road in New Delhi. The move is a historic milestone in the life of Gandhi, who will probably complete settling in the new house by the conclusion of the monsoon session of parliament on July 21. After being reinstated to his seat in the parliament in 2023, 137 days after he was disqualified on a conviction in a defamation case, he was allowed to use the bungalow of the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The conviction was later stayed by the Supreme Court, enabling him to resume his seat in the Lower House.

Renovations on the new home have been a labour of love, taking almost one year to complete. One of his aides disclosed that the area has been well decorated to give a very cosy and secluded environment similar to his previous home at 12 Tughlaq Lane. His aide also said that as much as he will be making the transition, Gandhi will still attend meetings and gatherings in 10 Janpath (where his mother Sonia Gandhi lives) and at the Indira Bhavan, Congress headquarters.

Rahul was staying in a bungalow hitherto used by BJP strongman and former Union minister A. Narayanaswamy, which is being charmingly furnished under the care of Rahul’s sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Gandhi will also bring with him his doggies, Pidi and Yassa, a Jack Russell Terrier, to the new residence. As a kind of a gift, he also gave his mother, Sonia Gandhi, a Russell Terrier puppy whose name is Noorie.

Although it is not yet clear whether Gandhi would take his office to his new home or still use Indira Bhavan, one of the party aides opined that this development is the start of another phase of Rahul Gandhi, one that would establish the new location as the nerve centre.
