Iran has fired a missile that has cluster submunitions into central Israel, which is the first instance in which such munitions are used in the current eight-day conflict between the two countries. Israeli officials said the attack was well-placed in a populated area and that it was programmed to cause as much harm as possible, raining down tens of bomblets over a broad expanse when it exploded.

This missile was said to have detonated at a height of about 7 km, and it ejected about 20 submunitions within an 8km radius in central Israel. The attack was confirmed by the embassy of Israel in Washington, saying, “As we said, today the Iranian Armed Forces fired a missile containing cluster submunitions into a populated area in Israel.” International observers have been frightened by the nature of the weapon as cluster munitions are being indiscriminate and banned by humanitarian groups many decades ago.

The assault occurred as the missile assault between the two countries was escalating, with each side launching air operations all day long. The Israeli media reported that four days ago, at the spot of an earlier missile attack, the body of a woman was found, thus increasing the number of victims of the Israeli side since the start of hostilities to 25 people.

The Iran government has made no official statement or reacted to the Israeli and its allies’ claims. In the meantime, the escalations of this conflict have aroused a strong concern all over the world as it is likely to sweep a larger part of the Middle East and kill a lot of civilians. This is coupled with the fact that cluster munition, a weapon, which is prohibited in multi countries because of its detrimining long term effect, has been used thus creating even more urgency on the international response to the issue and a diplomatic solution which must be brought to the table before the conflict over somalia runs further off the hand.
