NEW DELHI: A significant development has surfaced in the investigation into the brutal killing of 29-year-old Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya. Police have identified Sanjay Verma, a previously unknown individual, who had extensive telephonic contact with Raja’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, both before and after their wedding.
Call data records reveal a staggering 119 calls exchanged between Sonam and Sanjay between March 1 and March 25. Sanjay Verma’s mobile number is currently switched off, raising further questions about his involvement.
Raja Raghuvanshi met a gruesome end on May 23 in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills. He was attacked and allegedly thrown into a gorge near the Wei Sawdong Falls, his body recovered ten days later on June 2.
Timeline of Events:
- May 11: Raja and Sonam are married in Indore.
- May 21: The couple arrives in Shillong and checks into Balaji Guest House.
- May 22: They rent a scooty and travel to Sohra.
- May 23: Raja is last seen alive on a trek near Nongriat village by a local guide.
- May 24: The rented scooty is found abandoned at Sohrarim.
- June 2: Raja’s decomposed body is located in a gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls.
- June 7-8: Arrests are made in the case. Sonam Raghuvanshi later surrenders in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh.
Chilling Scene Reconstruction:
Police reconstruction of the crime scene paints a chilling picture. According to their findings, Raja was first struck with a machete, locally known as a “dao,” by Vishal Singh Chauhan, one of three alleged hitmen hired for the crime. Sonam was reportedly present during the attack. She allegedly fled the scene when her husband began to bleed and scream, returning only after he had succumbed to the multiple blows.
The entry of Sanjay Verma’s name and the extensive call records with Sonam Raghuvanshi add a new layer of complexity to the already unfolding murder mystery, as investigators continue to piece together the full narrative of this tragic incident.
