A new twist on the story has shocked the nation weeks after a 29-year-old Indore businessman, Raja Raghuvanshi, was murdered on his honeymoon in Meghalaya after he was recently married. On May 23, Raja was killed in Sohra, East Khasi Hills, and his body was found in a deep gorge near Weisawdong Falls on June 2, but in a decomposed state. The matter took a dramatic twist when police in a dramatic turn-around arrested his wife, a 25-year-old Sonam, together with his partner Raj and three hitmen who were hired as contract killers on June 9.
In an address to reporters, Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang has been sceptical about this motive, which on the face seems to be a love triangle. “In all honesty, I can hardly believe that there is such hatred that a person can plan a murder several days after the marriage. It appears to be a love triangle, it may be more than that, I think,” she answered.
Nongrang assured that the investigation is on course and that the police are on the ground to come up with a watertight case. “We are not turning over any stones. Loose ends are also being sewn and we are collecting all the necessary evidence so that the case can be chargesheeted within the stipulated time given,” she added.
Sonam and Raja got married on May 11 in Indore and arrived in Meghalaya on May 21 through Guwahati. Two days on, they were declared missing upon checking out of a homestay in Nongriat. In the Weisawdong Falls parking lot, Raja was killed with a machete, and Sonam was the alleged witness to the case. Then his body was cast into a gorge.
Sonam, who was later found in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, confessed to the police about the whereabouts of the missing jewellery belonging to Raja. All five suspects will travel to Sohra to conduct a crime scene reconstruction.
