Bhopal: This is a big blow to the state of Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, as cheap and comfortable public transport bus drivers and conductors of Bhopal City Link Limited (BCLL) have staged an indefinite strike. The strike started off with a demonstration at the Bagsewania depot as many of the riled-up drivers and conductors shouted slogans against the BCLL administration and the private bus operators.
Through the strike, buses that run on low floors have been grounded on a number of city routes, resulting in severe effects on thousands of commuters on a daily basis. There have been 12 routes affected, and at least six routes of the route network have been thoroughly disrupted. The absence of regular buses created a lot of inconvenience to many of the daily wage workers, students, and those who had to commute to work in the offices.
Some of the major causes of strikes include non-payment of salary, pending gratuity, and delays in Provident Fund (PF) drawing. Drivers and conductors have been very unhappy with the current management and have moved to indicate clearly that they will not go back to work till their demands are met.
As far as protesting workers are concerned, they have been complaining many times, but their problems remain unresolved by BCLL or bus operators. They are also demanding immediate payment of the pending dues and a proper solution to the problem on salary and PF matters in a lasting manner. Most laborers have alleged that they have not been paid their salaries in recent months, leaving them in economic crisis.
The unspecified sit-down strike is likely to go on and make the authorities come to the table and discuss the issue. In the meantime, the people in the city have been calling on authorities to find a solution promptly to deal with this problem and put the normalcy of the city back into the transport system, which sustains thousands of people in the city.
