With an average first week, an immense second weekend was the desperate demand of Housefull 5 to either sustain the box office game or die, yet it appears that it has already done so. Even though the reviews have not been all rosy and with the mounting pressure of a high expectation, the comedy entertainer has exhibited resilience, especially when there has been no considerable new release in Hindi. On the second Saturday (Day 9), the film rebounded convincingly, and it experienced a steady rise in the collections, which reflected that the film still had favour with the audience.
In its opening week, Housefull 5 grossed an admirable amount of 133.58 crores at the Indian box office. Although this number is quite impressive on its own, it looked somewhat disappointing considering the massive hype that the fifth film of the popular franchise received. The true test really came during the second week, when the film-watching spectators were monitoring whether the film would keep its momentum level with the fading buzz and critical naysaying.
On Day 8 (the second Friday), the movie was able to earn 6.60 crore, a reasonable hold. However, it recorded an actual jump on Day 9 (second Saturday): it rose to 54.69 per cent and earned 10.21 crore. This brought the total net domestic collection of the film to 150.39 crores, with its gross total reaching 177.46 crores.
This success officially means that Housefull 5 has now beaten the lifetime total of OMG 2 (150 cr) and therefore reclaims 7th all-time laurels in the Indian box office of a film by Akshay Kumar. The trends indicate that the movie should be in a position to beat Kesari ( 153 crores) by the close of Day 10 (Sunday) to ride even higher on the actor box office leaderboard.
So far, Housefull 5 appears on its way to a positive verdict, which begs the question of whether Akshay Kumar is still a box office attraction despite the combined critical reception.
