In a chilling development, Meghalaya Police have reached a black and very shocking development in the murder case of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi. Police officials said that the accused had not only conspired to murder Raja but had also intended to kill an unidentified woman, burn her body and cache her as the wife of Raja, Sonam Raghuvanshi. The reasoning behind the inhuman act was to give Sonam time to vanish and avoid security before the murder reality surfaced.
East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said that Raj Kushwaha was the brain of the conspiracy, and Sonam Raghuvanshi was a very important co-conspirator. It is said that the plot was conspired in Indore a few weeks ahead of the wedding of the couple. According to investigators, several plans to murder had been contemplated before they finally carried out the operation in Meghalaya.
The four killers were the friends of Sonam and Raj, and one of them was the cousin of Raj. The planning started in February 2025. The group had originally planned to kill Raja in Guwahati, but later changed the plans and instead enticed the couple to Shillong and then Sohra (Cherrapunjee). On May 19, they met in Nongriat and went to Weisawdong Falls, where Raja was hacked to death using a machete and then tossed into a ravine in front of Sonam.
To help her escape, Sonam handed over her blood-stained raincoat to one of the killers, Akash, who threw it away later. Raj secured Sonam a burqa via Vishal Chauhan and escaped to Indore, and subsequently orchestrated a fake reappearance in Siliguri, where she faked that she had managed to overcome her abduction.
The plan, however, fell through after the arrest of Akash on June 8. Raj panicked and made Sonam call her family and lie that she had managed to escape. She eventually threw her arms in Ghazipur on June 9.
