Vizhinjam International Seaport welcomed on Monday, MSC IRINA, the biggest container ship in the world by number of containers, marking a special moment for India’s shipping industry. The Adani Group, which runs the Vizhinjam port, confirmed in a press release that the ship’s arrival proves how prepared the port is and how much it is gaining importance.
Having the massive capacity of 24,346 TEUs, the MSC IRINA shows the incredible skill of its creators. It measures 399.9 metres in length and 61.3 metres in width, so it is about four times longer than a typical FIFA football field. The ship is created for moving huge container loads from Asia to Europe, which greatly helps increase the efficiency of global shipping.
MSC IRINA reaching Vizhinjam is its first visit to any South Asian port, displaying the port’s advanced facilities and abilities to handle big and advanced vessels. Earlier, the port dealt with other major vessels such as the MSC Turkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini, making it an even more important place in world maritime business.
Starting in March 2023, MSC IRINA began its travels and can handle up to 26 tiers of containers. It has 150 more TEUs than the OOCL Spain.
Apart from its large size, the vessel proves how committed it is to sustainability. Energy-saving features are used to cut down carbon emissions by up to 4%, meaning the new one is friendly to the environment and still gives great performance.
The fact that MSC IRINA docked in India sets a good example for the country’s involvement in both global trade and protection of the sea.
