New Delhi: India registered 8.6 million deaths in 2022, a substantial 15% decline from the 10.2 million fatalities recorded in 2021, which was the deadliest year of the COVID-19 pandemic. This positive trend suggests a strong return to pre-pandemic mortality levels, indicating a normalization of public health conditions as the severity of COVID-19 infections decreased and widespread vaccination efforts took hold.
According to new data from the Civil Registration System (CRS) released by the Office of the Registrar General of India, the 2022 figures bring the nation’s death rate broadly back in line with patterns observed in 2019. The spike in deaths in 2021 underscored the profound impact of the pandemic’s second wave, which severely strained healthcare infrastructure across the country.
The significant reduction in mortality in 2022 can be attributed to multiple factors. The evolving nature of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, with newer variants often proving less virulent, played a crucial role. Furthermore, India’s robust vaccination drive, which saw billions of doses administered across the population, is widely credited with mitigating severe illness and preventing deaths. Studies have consistently shown that COVID-19 vaccines provided substantial protection against mortality.
While the overall trend points to a recovering health system, the CRS report also highlighted that some states and union territories may have undercounted COVID-19 related deaths in 2022. Despite this, the national data offers a hopeful outlook, demonstrating the country’s resilience in overcoming the pandemic’s most devastating phase and its gradual return to a healthier mortality trajectory.
