Rahul Gandhi, head of the opposition party, claimed on Saturday that the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections were rigged and prepared a plan for similar acts in the future. On that social media platform, Gandhi delivered a message detailing an article he had authored, which offered his view on how elections are influenced.
In his message, he said, “How to commit voter fraud? The elections for the Maharashtra assembly in 2024 perfectly demonstrated how to defraud democracy. My article explains the process step by step.”
Rahul Gandhi further explained his claims by identifying five main aspects.
- Manipulating the body responsible for choosing the Election Commission officials.
- Tampering with the electoral roll by adding phoney people.
- Increasing the number of votes cast more than what’s realistic.
- Making fake votes in areas where the BJP aimed to get a majority of votes.
- Concealing and deleting traces of the rigging.
He stated that just like in match-fixing, the side that cheats might emerge as the winner, yet these actions serve to weaken the organisation and turn people away from trusting the results. He anticipates that similar strategies may be applied in upcoming elections in Bihar because, he says, the BJP fears losing in these states.
Gandhi urged the public to judge the evidence for themselves and make sure those in power are held responsible, since match-fixed elections are harmful to any democracy.
In the 2024 assembly elections in Maharashtra, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance took home 235 seats. During the same time, the ruling MVA coalition lost many seats in the outcome. In response to Gandhi’s claims, BJP leaders called them false and said they were trying to bring down the whole election after their defeat.
