Among festivals in Islam, Eid al-Adha, which is sometimes called Bakrid or the Festival of Sacrifice, has the greatest spiritual meaning. After Eid al-Fitr, it is known as the second most important holiday, honoured with great respect in the Muslim world. The festival is a reminder of how devoted Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) was, when he was willing to sacrifice his son Ishmael in obedience to God’s wish.
Eid al-Adha will start on Friday, June 6, at night, and the main events will occur on Saturday, June 7, across India. On this day, Muslims around the planet join in prayer, pay it forward through charity, take part in sacrificial offerings called Qurbani and spread the meat with those close to them and people who need it.
