Norway Chess 2025: India’s current world champion D Gukesh has achieved a major feat in the Norway Chess 2025 tournament. He defeated former world number-1 Magnus Carlsen for the first time in his career in the classical time control format in the sixth round. This match was also special for Gukesh because Carlsen had defeated him in the first round.

Gukesh’s concentration did not break even under pressure

This match played in Stavanger was full of excitement. Playing with white pieces, 18-year-old Gukesh showed discipline right from the beginning and strongly responded to every move of Carlsen. Although Carlsen seemed to be in a better position till the middle of the match, but in the last moments of the game he made a mistake and from here the course of the match changed.

Gukesh made full use of this opportunity and created history. He finished the match with patience and precise strategy. Carlsen, who was upset with the defeat, was seen banging his hand on the chess board in anger. Later, he sat in his car and left the place without talking to anyone.

t is worth noting that in this format, Carlsen has always considered himself the ‘king’. Just a few days ago, he had made a cryptic social media post after his victory against Gukesh – “If you come close to the king, don’t miss.” But now the same Gukesh has beaten him in his own game. This is the second time that a young Indian player has defeated Carlsen in the classical format at the Norway Chess tournament. Earlier in 2024, R. Praggnanandhaa had achieved this feat.

Gukesh also won the World Championship recently

Gukesh won the title by defeating Ding Liren of China in the final of the World Chess Championship held in Singapore in December 2024. He became the first player to become world champion at the age of 18. Earlier this record was in the name of Garry Kasparov in 1985, who achieved this feat at the age of 22.

Played an important role in Olympiad victory too

Gukesh also played a decisive role in making India the champion in the Chess Olympiad held in Budapest last year. He won the gold medal for India by winning the final round of the open category.
