A landslide at an Indian Army camp in North Sikkim on Sunday night ended in the death of three soldiers, and nine others are still missing. Looking for survivors continues, as officials in the region have reported.

When the Lachen River’s water rose fast, massive soil erosion followed. Because the Lachen River overflowed, a landslide struck the army camp at Chatten. Three groups of personnel from the army have been found, and nine others are still missing. Army search teams have been deployed for the operation, stated Arun Thatal, Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Chungthang in Mangan district.

Chatten, only a few kilometers from Lachen, is one of the areas worst hit by the troubles. The Indian Army revealed on Monday that the landslide affected people in the nearby areas, and their identities are presently being confirmed. The army is still looking for the missing soldiers, even though facing tough terrain and weather.

At the same time, large rescue teams were dispatched to other regions of North Sikkim because heavy rains brought down many landslides and caused several flash floods, isolating many communities. The town of Lachung, which is frequented by tourists, was inaccessible since May 30. The roads were swept clean by the night crew, and at dawn, local authorities managed to evacuate 1,600 people from the stranded tour group, with half of them being young children.

According to Mangan’s District Collector, Anant Jain, around 150 tourists are still staying in Lachen, and it is yet to be accessible. They have hotels where they are kept safely and looked after. The NDRF is there as well to help with rescue and recovery. Rescue teams continue facing major difficulties due to the recent constant rainfall.
