On Monday, a Mahila Court in Chennai found A Gnanasekaran guilty in the Anna University sexual assault case and ordered him to be in prison for life, forbidding him from parole for at least 30 years. A fine of ₹90,000 was ordered by the court for the convicted person. Widespread public and political protests arose in Tamil Nadu in the wake of the attack in December 2024.
On May 28, the court found Gnanasekaran guilty of a bribery charge after concluding that the prosecution had proved his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. On June 2, Judge Rajalakshmi at the Mahila court issued the decision, speaking about how serious the crime was and the evidence presented to support it. Among the 11 charges, the prosecution had included offenses related to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the Information Technology Act, and the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Harassment of Women Act. The jury found all charges grounded by reliable evidence.
On December 23, 2024, a woman student from Anna University went to the All Women Police Station in Kotturpuram, Chennai, to register a complaint. She claimed that Gnanasekaran was threatening her while she was with a guy friend, and then sexually harassed her. The leak of the FIR online through the Tamil Nadu police’s CCTNS portal caused more people in the area to be upset.
As a result of the scandal, the Madras High Court decided to assign the matter to a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which also handled the investigation into who leaked the FIR. A charge sheet was submitted in February, and the matter was handled at the Mahila court.
Chief Minister MK Stalin was pleased with the verdict, saying that the justice was delivered in less than five months.
