Facing criticism from inside Congress after his remarks in Panama, Shashi Tharoor responded on Thursday by refuting accusations that he had diminished India’s military history or harmed the Congress party. Minister Tharoor attracted controversy when he said during an international event in Panama that India had first crossed the LoC during its 2016 strike on a terrorist camp in Pakistan.
In response to Tharoor’s remarks, Congress leader Udit Raj said he should be hired as a super spokesperson for the BJP because he was distorting the truth.
Taking to platform X, Tharoor said the criticism was not fair and misunderstood by people who are too religious. “After a long and successful day in Panama, I have to wind up at midnight, where with departure for Bogota, Colombia in six hours, so I don’t really have time for this — but anyway: For those zealots fulminating about my supposed ignorance of Indian valour across the LoC: in the past. I was clearly and explicitly speaking only about reprisals for terrorist attacks and not about previous wars; & My remarks were preceded by a reference to the several attacks that have taken place in recent years alone, during which previous Indian responses were both restrained and constrained by our responsible respect for the LoC and the IB.”
Tharoor made it clear that his words were about India’s current military strategy following terror attacks, not about old wars, including the one in 1971 or Kargil.
While Shashi Tharoor is on a diplomatic tour in five countries, the episode has made party leaders within Congress dispute each other over how party officials should mention national security or the nation’s military history in global forums.
