Soon, Myanmarese refugees hiding in Mizoram will be given the chance to enrol on a unique online platform, Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, has promised. Shah announced his decision after talking to Mizoram’s chief minister Lalduhoma in Delhi on Saturday. As per a release from the Mizoram government, the portal will simplify the process of finding and managing refugees from Myanmar, helping to deal with the various difficulties resulting from the crisis next door.
Earlier, Minister Sapdanga mentioned in the state assembly that the Ministry of Home Affairs’ existing system was not able to collect certain important information. Shah believes that fixing these critical weaknesses is now happening, and the planned portal will result in a better-organised database for refugees.
At the meeting, Shah commended the Mizoram government for its peacekeeping work in the region. The Union Minister recognised the hard work of Chief Minister Lalduhoma and promised to support the state’s signature Bana Kaih initiative by launching peace programs. Shah praised the initiative as a “peace dividend” and said he was prepared to look into other forms of assistance.
Lalduhoma also pointed out that Shah had supported Mizoram’s frequent demand to set up a Territorial Army unit that would tackle cross-border drug smuggling. MLA and retired Lt. Col. Clement Lalhmingthanga, along with others, have been gathered on a committee to help find an area to construct the Mizo Territorial Army Battalion. Processes are being set up to build up two companies in the Territorial Army according to rules from the central government.
He also asked the ministry to speed up giving Lengpui Airport to the Airports Authority of India, which is important for developing aviation infrastructure in Meghalaya.
