Although the BCCI announced Gill as India’s Test captain on Sunday, he was already back leading his IPL team, the Gujarat Titans, on Monday. The new sponsor deal was announced as the squad for the five-match Test series in England was revealed. At the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ravi Shastri greeted him with a lot of praise as he conducted the toss for the IPL game between the Gujarat Titans and the Chennai Super Kings.

“Many congratulations, Shubman. At your age, you led India, and now you’re leading the Gujarat Titans. What kind of emotions are you experiencing? Host Shastri asked Shubman the question during the toss time. Obviously excited, Gill commented, “It’s great to have those types of challenges playing with the red Dasha ball.” I believe the series will be something exciting for us.”

Even so, the mood at the nearly empty Ahmedabad venue showed something quite different. While Gill was promoted earlier, the fans still cheered for CSK captain MS Dhoni the most. With Chennai’s season ending on that day and Dhoni’s fate unclear, many seemed to recognise what the day meant and burst into cheers for the star as he won the toss and decided to bat.

Though Ahmedabad stadium officials celebrated Gill after the toss, most focus was still on Dhoni. Yet, the occasion brought about a mark of change in the world of Indian cricket.

Gill will guide a renewed Indian group in the England Test series as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin retired after their disappointing experience in Australia. The first match of India’s ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 will be against England and represents a new epoch under Rishabh Gill’s leadership.
