New analysis by the news agency, based on information from the CAA, has found that Air India faces the most departing UK flight delays in 2024. On average, the airline’s flights were 45 minutes and 48 seconds later than scheduled. The route with the biggest delays was Gatwick to Bangalore, with an overall delay of 1 hour and 23 minutes seen across 50 flights.

Rory Boland called the airline’s performance “unacceptable,” saying that passengers had a poor experience. According to Air India, the delays were caused by things outside their power, but they did not give further information.

Guernsey-based Aurigny Air Services had the third highest delay, averaging 31 minutes and 12 seconds behind Air India. SunExpress and Air Portugal, with 29 minutes and 36 seconds and 25 minutes and 12 seconds, respectively, followed. On the plus side, Emerald Airlines had almost no delays, averaging just ten minutes and half as many as all other airlines.

The report covers every scheduled and charter flight from UK airports by airlines running more than 2,500 flights in 2024, but not cancelled flights. On average, there was an 18-minute and 18-second delay, which was less than the 20 minutes and 42 seconds seen last year.

Air India, purchased by the Tata Group in January 2022, has been unable to use its planes due to problems securing spare parts. Yet, according to aviation expert John Strickland, the airline is actively improving engineering, upkeep and workforce. Even as it introduces a new A350 first-class cabin, the experts insist on the need for the airline to start meeting flights on time and consistently.
