A major thunderstorm in Delhi on Saturday night and into early Sunday brought delays and cancellations at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, the country’s top airport. Heavy weather caused 17 international and 49 more domestic flights to reroute, and most of the remaining 200 were delayed, leading to difficulties for many passengers.
Starting around 11:30 PM, a thunderstorm caused strong winds, intense lightning and heavy rain in the city until 4:00 AM. IMD said that Delhi had a torrential downpour of 81.2 mm in just six hours. Hence, the many issues led to planes delaying, rerouting or not being able to take off at all. On average, delays caused by bad weather and busy airstreams lasted almost 45 minutes.
People flying with IndiGo were kept up to date about the situation through their social media messages. The airline posted on their X account at 3:59 AM: “The weather is improving a bit, but there are still some crowded areas at the airport. We are confident flight movements will continue to resume as the situation allows.”
The authorities at Delhi Airport sent out a tip to travellers at 6:50 AM about the delays they should expect. The advisory suggested that people on those flights watch their flight info and keep talking to the airline. “Our staff on the ground is currently working closely with all parties to provide efficient and smooth travel to our passengers,” it added.
Recently, Indira Gandhi International Airport dealt with one of the busiest periods in its history because of this sudden weather change.
