Mamata Banerjee didn’t attend the 10th Governing Council meeting of the NITI Aayog in New Delhi on Saturday. The meeting, led by Prime Minister Modi, was called ‘Viksit Rajya for Viksit Bharat@2047’ and discussed how states can help India become developed. Still, many politicians are reacting strongly to Banerjee’s missing attendance at this important forum.
Earlier, the TMC chief, Mamata Banerjee, had also distanced herself from the NITI Aayog. In July 2024, she quit a meeting, saying she wasn’t allowed to say anything important since she only had five minutes. She seems to be protesting the same issue this year, that is, the Centre ignoring cooperative federalism.
TMC MP Saugata Roy said Banerjee was right to oppose the creation of NITI Aayog, as it was unethical to replace the Planning Commission with it. Frequently, states do not have permission to express their opinions at the UN. It was the correct decision for Banerjee not to attend the meeting. It communicates something to everyone. For the present, it does not seem clear who, if anyone, represented West Bengal while the chief minister was out of the country.
Yet, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress strongly condemned the decision. According to BJP spokesman Samik Bhattacharya, Trinamool Congress MP Banerjee is putting the state’s interests at risk. West Bengal is taking more time to grow. Young people are leaving our country to seek out education and jobs. Failing to join these forums only to show her opposition to the Centre may make matters worse for Punjab in future, he feels.
Chowdhury, the leader of the Congress, pointed out that Mamata Banerjee is being rude to the institution and not standing with her people by refusing to attend. That is what we mean by poor governance in this case.
