Delhi Police managed to track down Sabir Alam, who was hiding for over three years after being accused in a fake cancer drug racket. Thanks to a tip-off which was followed up properly, Alam was caught from Rani Ganj in West Bengal, officials revealed on Saturday.
Alam, who left school early and at one time was a cab driver, was named a proclaimed offender after the investigation into spurious cancer medicine. At the beginning of November 2022, four arrests were made for having fake cancer drugs.
Investigations after the raid found a big illegal pharmaceutical operation, resulting in the arrests of 14 people, among them were two doctors. During raids in Sonipat, Haryana and Tronica City, Uttar Pradesh, police seized huge stocks of fake cancer drugs.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Harsh Indora said that Alam was a key member of the racket. From Kolkata, illegal cancer drug were distributed under his control and were shipped across the border to Dr. Rasel in Bangladesh. He also handled taking cash from unwary patients and shared the proceeds with co-accused Dr. Pabitra Narayan Pradhan and Shubham Manna, holding a percentage back for himself.
Based on fresh intelligence saying Alam was in Rani Ganj for his honeymoon, the police carried out a search at all nearby hotels and guesthouses. On May 20, they got a phone call saying Apurv was heading for Kanda in Bardhman. The police quickly brought the suspect to the Kanda bus station, where they made the arrest.
They are still working to find more parts of the fake drug network.
