Even as many around the world call for peace, Russia and Ukraine are intensifying their use of drones and missiles. Officials from the Russian Defence Ministry said that, on Thursday, Russian air defence systems brought down and destroyed 35 Ukrainian drones meant for Moscow and an additional 70 hostile drones in many other regions. Many drones flying over the area led to two airports in Moscow putting flights on hold for a short time. Moscow’s mayor said that some drones launched toward the city were brought down early in their approach.
The raid was carried out only a day after Russia said it had brought down more than 300 Ukrainian drones. Even though Ukraine has not officially spoken about drone usage, both parties are now using them as a main element in their warfare.
In a different development, Russia also revealed it had launched an Iskander-M missile against the city of Pokrov (formerly Ordzhonikidze) in the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine. According to Russian Defence Ministry reports, the U.S. Patriot missile launchers and a radar system supplying the Patriot system were both destroyed in the strike. Ukraine’s military reported damage to the area but did not say what weapons caused it.
Diplomacy by world powers such as the United States is not yet able to turn back the violence of the ongoing war. Reports say Russian forces are pushing forward in significant positions, as military bloggers associated with Russia say Russian troops have broken through Ukrainian defences between Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka in Donetsk.
Even as diplomacy goes on, the rising number of drone attacks and missile strikes suggests the situation is getting worse and making it tougher to secure a ceasefire.
