An umpire’s controversial call involving Abishek Porel at the third-umpire break during the Mumbai Indians (MI) vs. Delhi Capitals (DC) game at the Wankhede Stadium made news. With the game still close in the fifth over, Mumbai then won by a large margin and secured their place in the playoffs while knocking Delhi out.

In their quest for 181, Delhi Capitals saw Faf du Plessis and KL Rahul dismissed quickly during the first three overs. Under the pressure, Abishek Porel, considered one of DC’s best all season, tried to push the game forward. Even so, Will Jacks’ bowling threw him off balance, causing some controversy.

As he delivered the ball, it suddenly moved and got hold of the pitch, inviting Abishek Porel to come out of his crease. Lightning-quick Ryan Rickelton removed the bails after keeping the ball clean from the stumps. The decision was sent to the video officials for review.

When the replay took several angles, one seemed to suggest that Porel was grounded when the bails went down, yet another suggested his back foot was off the ground for a moment. Historically, when the umpire is partly unsure, the batter gets the benefit. After examining the footage, the third umpire decided Porel was out at last and Will Jacks was credited with his first IPL wicket.

People on social media and in the cricket world began to question why third-umpire decisions were inconsistent and what the meaning of the cricket rules really is. Even though replays seemed like they supported Porel, another look at the footage revealed that Rickelton rooted the sticks just when Porel was in the air.
