Villagers in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir discovered the body of 23-year-old Imtiyaz Ahmad Magray on Sunday, following accusations that security forces had detained him for questioning after the Pahalgam terror attack.
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti voiced serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding Magray’s death. The resident of Tangmarg, Kulgam, was found in the Adbal stream in the Aharbal area of Kulgam district on Sunday.
India has cut off water flow to Pakistan from the Baglihar dam on the Chenab river and is also preparing to taper down runoffs from the Kishanganga project on the Jhelum, following through on its decisions not to allow a “single drop” from going to the neighbouring country from the Indus rivers.
After a week of deliberations and hydrological assessments, India initiated de-silting activities at the Baglihar dam, which involved lowering its sluice gates. This action resulted in a significant reduction of up to 90% in the water flow downstream towards Pakistan. Simultaneously, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation official announced on Sunday that similar de-silting operations are slated for the Kishanganga dam.
“We have closed the gates of the Baglihar hydel power project. We had done de-silting of the reservoir and it has to be refilled. The process was started on Saturday,” said a second official, who declined to be named.
India’s actions came within hours of Pakistan’s testing its surface-to-surface ballistic missile on Saturday, including banning of the docking of ships bearing the Pakistani flag in all ports of the country.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan army violated the ceasefire along several sectors across the Line of Control (LoC) and the international border in Jammu. A statement from the Indian army accused Pakistani troops of resorting to unprovoked small arms fire across these regions. “Indian Army responded promptly and proportionately,” it added.
Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations and President of the Security Council for the month of May, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, had expressed readiness to hold a meeting to discuss tensions between India and Pakistan. “I think this meeting should take place because, as we said, maybe it’s also an opportunity to have views expressed, and this might help diffuse a bit of tension,” Sekeris said.
