Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are staring at a disappointing exit from the IPL 2025 playoffs race as they have won just two out of the first nine games. A shadow of its former self, the team, which has been famed for being a consistent, brilliant, and pragmatic team in recent years, has been lacking in brilliance and consistency. With their eyes set on Punjab Kings in the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the franchise is under pressure to provide answers to its direction and team building, while the team is preparing to face Punjab Kings.
Ahead of the crunch fixture, the batting coach of CSK, Michael Hussey, was candid about the fact that the CSK management has to improve its talent identification and development strategies. Hussey said the franchise knew it needed to scout and nurture young players, a weakness that has been often cited but recently refuted by the franchise, which, through reviving the careers of ruined players such as Rahane and Dube, has reaped success.
“I think it’s one area that we have identified as an area that we want to improve on, talent identification. We have different players come in and train with us as we have done in different stages, on trial. When their names come up at the auction, we’ve already seen them live and can be more informed. We get a better feel for them just by watching than from watching video clips.”
He also suggested that young players being given a chance to play practice matches would be a great way to see how they would handle the pressure. This franchise has already provided promising talents like Shaik Rasheed, Ayush Mhatre, and Dewald Brevis to the franchise this season, which reflects the shift towards the long term.
With only four points, CSK are languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2025 standings and have even the slightest mathematical hope of qualification in CSK’s upcoming match.
