Jagdalpur: It is the ninth day of the anti-Naxal operation in the dense terrains of Karregutta hill on the Chhattisgarh–Telangana border. In a major breakthrough on Tuesday, security forces took over the strategic hilltop with the help of helicopters after deploying about 500 specially trained personnel. Video of the air drop operation has surfaced, showing just how large and precise the mission was.

At the initial stage, the operation was being carried out by Chhattisgarh Police, Telangana Police and paramilitary units. In any case, reinforcements from central state security forces based in Bihar and Jharkhand now also stand by the multi-state crackdown on Naxalite strongholds in the region.

Karregutta is notorious for dense forest cover as well as rugged terrain, and has been a safe haven for Naxal insurgents for a long time. However, that operation is physically taxing because of the scorching temperatures hovering between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius, which the area is currently experiencing. Indecent incidents have led to the dehydration of several personnel, whilst two soldiers were injured from IEDs planted by the rebels.

However, even in the face of these trials, the forces have notched up some success, though they have killed three female Naxal operatives during encounters in the recent past days. Official sources cited say that the number of people currently deployed on the ongoing mission is about 10,000 to 12,000. Their primary aim is to wipe off the Naxal presence and make them fall flat by dismantling the hidden bunkers and capturing key positions in the forest zone.

Security officials say the operation will not be halted and will continue until all control is secured. Advancing towards two other hill ranges which lie near Karregutta, the Forces plan on advancing. The Bhopalpatnam region will be secured once it is, and the same will be made available, making another strategic movement supply route. The operation is an organised and serious effort to drive out Naxal areas and ensure peace in the locale.
