Delhi Rohini Fire : A sudden fire broke out in the slums of Rohini Sector-17 in Delhi at around 12 noon on Sunday, due to which 2 children were burnt alive and about four thousand people became homeless. The deceased have been identified as 3-year-old Sadiya and 4-year-old Alam. The flames of the fire were so strong that the smoke was visible from a distance. On receiving the information, fire brigade personnel immediately reached the spot, but 30 fire engines had to work hard for about 4 hours to control the fire.

“Deeply saddened by the tragic fire incident in Rohini. Heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this unfortunate tragedy”, wrote CM Rekha Gupta on X. She further informed that the displaced families have been shifted to nearby schools for temporary shelter.

Rohini Deputy Commissioner of Police Amit Goyal informed that the burnt bodies of two children, aged two and a half years and three years, were found from the spot. Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officials said that they received information about the fire at around 11:55 am. The fire broke out near Sriniketan Apartment in Sector-17, after which 17 fire engines were immediately dispatched. A total of 26 fire engines were deployed at the spot.

The official informed that more than 800 huts spread over about five acres were burnt to ashes due to the fire. Several teams of fire brigade and police were deployed at the spot. According to DFS, the fire started from a hut and quickly engulfed the entire area. There was a lack of space at the place of the fire, which caused the firefighters to face many difficulties.

According to fire department officials, about a dozen cylinders exploded during the fire, causing the fire to spread rapidly. While firefighters were trying to douse the fire, cylinders kept in some slums were exploding repeatedly. A meticulous operation was carried out to control the fire, in which a team of more than 50 firefighters was deployed. During this, personnel worked in four different categories; two teams took up the task of controlling the fire, one team started cooling work after the fire was extinguished, while another team conducted a search operation and tried to identify the people caught in the fire.

Fire engines were stoned for arriving late

Local residents say that the fire brigade personnel reached the spot about 45 minutes after the accident, which caused anger among the people. Due to this anger, they pelted stones at the fire engines, breaking one vehicle’s glass. Police force was called to control the situation, which pacified the people by explaining things to them.

The fire officer said that there was a lot of difficulty in reaching the spot, as it took time to reach due to the narrow roads and lanes. Apart from this, the fire spread rapidly due to the abundance of junk and inflammable material. The victims informed that due to the fire, the junk warehouse and ration shop located in the slum were completely burnt to ashes. In this incident, people’s jewelry, essential goods and cash worth lakhs of rupees were also destroyed.
