The night was one for the hell of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, where at least nine people died and over 60 were injured, including six children, from one of the worst Russian drone and missile strikes in the past months. The attack in the early Thursday hours destroyed whole residential neighbourhoods, set off fires, and caused panic.

The Kyiv City Military Administration said Russia fired both drones and ballistic missiles in a coordinated attack. Missiles hit apartment complexes and other civilian infrastructure inside the city, firing in the direction of the city, sparking fires in several parts of it. Emergency services launched rescue operations immediately following rescue work through the night, clearing rubble and extinguishing flames, the military administration head of the city, Tymur Tkachenko, said.

A loud explosion is heard locally during the early morning hours, and air raid sirens jolt residents awake, followed by other loud explosions sounding across the capital. There was little room for evacuation, and many civilians were trapped in damaged buildings, whether by being burned out or by accident. Children were among the injured being carried to ambulances by first responders, and emergency shelters were activated.

The attack was condemned by Ukrainian officials, who called it a deliberate and brutal assault on civilian targets. The top aide of President Volodymyr Zelensky, Andriy Yermak, claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had not shown any interest in peace. Yermak said Putin only wanted to kill and slammed Moscow for not responding to Kyiv’s repeated appeals for airstrikes on civilians to stop.

The strike comes after Russia turned down last month the US and Ukrainian appeal for a full and unconditional ceasefire. It is the latest grim escalation of the fighting and illustrates how threats to civilian life are expanding in Ukraine’s urban centres.
