An Indian Army soldier was killed in action in a fierce encounter with terrorists situated in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district on Thursday. The gunfight broke out in this area while a cordon and search operation, based on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists, was underway, official sources said.

White Knight Corps of the Army’s Jammu-based Corps confirmed the development, posting on X, “Based on specific intelligence, a joint operation with @JmuKmrPolice was launched today in #Basantgarh, #Udhampur. Contact was established and a fierce firefight ensued. One of our #Bravehearts sustained grievous injuries in the initial exchange and later succumbed despite best medical efforts.”

Notably, it is two days after one of the deadliest terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir in recent times, in which as many as 26 people, including tourists and security personnel, were killed in a ferocious terrorist attack in the Pahalgam area of Anantnag district. It is an attack on an international scale, and the victims include an officer from the Indian Navy, a staff member from the Indian Air Force and a senior official from the Intelligence Bureau.

The Indian government has been responding with strong counterterror steps in which diplomatic as well as high-level strategic actions have been utilised. And India decided Wednesday to downgrade diplomatic ties with Pakistan, expelling Pakistani military attachés and suspending the long-standing Indus Water treaty. It also ordered the Attari land transit post, with significant trade and transit trade between the two countries, to be closed immediately. The measures taken by India on cross-border terrorism as its response to the ever-rising frustration with Pakistan’s alleged presence in cultivating and supporting terror groups within the region.
