Karvdha: It is a significant development in the sense of the success of the ongoing counterinsurgency and the effect of the government’s better rehabilitation policy, as two high-ranking Naxalite — Ramesh alias Atom Guddu and his wife Savita alias Lachhi Poyam — have surrendered to the Kabirdham Police of Chhattisgarh.
They were both carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh apiece on their heads and had been very active in Maoist activities for the past eight years. Ramesh was a well-known member of Platoon No. 01 under the MMC Zone of the GRB Division Committee, whereas 21-year-old Savita belonged to the Tanda Area Committee. It’s a major success in undermining the insurgency network in the area.
Ramesh, a naxalite, had been injured in a 2019 security forces encounter in the Bakoda forest under the Bhoramdeo police station limits. He was actively taking part in several violent operations against the state forces at that time. Ramesh and Savita had kept the 12-bore gun and an 8mm rifle, respectively, during their involvement with the Maoist outfit, suggesting they were frontline players in the rebels’ movement.
Security forces, along with the attractive benefits of the state government’s revised rehabilitation package, are so attracted that they don’t want to return to mainstream society, and that’s why they surrender those militants. The couple will be entitled to all the provisions accorded under the government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy. After the surrender, they will be given financial assistance, housing, education for children, and support in finding jobs.
It is among a growing list of insurgents choosing peace over violence, and the authorities say it will instil demoralizing into the active cadres in the region. The police have expressed their praise at the duo’s decision and urged other extremists to follow their example, guaranteeing them safety and support in starting over with a clean slate.
