A Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) senior official has strongly denied recent match-fixing allegations against the Rajasthan Royals (RR), who were close to losing to Super Giants Lucknow (LSG) in the losing contest of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Royals made a calamitous mess of the game, losing just two runs and Jaydeep Bihani, convenor of the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) ad-hoc committee, accused them of deliberately underperforming. After they failed to chase nine runs in the final over, Bihani wanted to know what the intent of the franchise was.
The BCCI official responded to the controversy by saying the claims are baseless and have no credibility. “The RCA is currently dissolved. There is an ad-hoc committee still in session temporarily and in the run up to elections, creating a lot of unnecessary tension.” The official told a news agency that everyone wants their moment in the spotlight.
The official also went on to reassure cricket fans and stakeholders that the BCCI have adequate mechanisms in place to ensure that the game is played in an integrity manner. During IPL season, ‘Our Anti Corruption Unit (ACU) is operating all tide’. Every match is closely monitored. He said there is absolutely no substance to these allegations.
The RCA ad hoc committee had sent a letter to the BCCI pointing its fingers at the Rajasthan Royals, and the latter responded with a strongly worded letter to the BCCI accusing the RCA ad hoc committee of making defamatory and baseless claims. Essentially, the statements made by the convenor have no supporting evidence and it seems as if they are made as a result of this otherwise complete nonsense in order to create as much needless controversy as possible. “In fact, they not only tarnish the reputation of the Royals but that of Royal Multi Sport Private Limited (RMPL), the Rajasthan Sports Council, the BCCI and the sport in general,” the franchise released in a statement.
The incident has worried the cricketing environment in Rajasthan as it has raised concerns over political principles imposing themselves in the scenario.
