Recently, YouTuber and Bigg Boss OTT 2 winner Elvish Yadav found himself under the scanner for his racist comments against actor and Bigg Boss 18 contestant Chum Darang. In February, on a podcast with fellow contestant Rajat Dalal, the remarks triggered worldwide social media backlash. In the podcast, Elvish mocked Chum’s name, taunted her about her ethnicity, made remarks about how she looked and her role in the film Gangubai Kathiawadi. “Asking who would not want Chum, bro? That means Karanveer, definitely has COVID,” he said. “Who has such bad taste! Chum’s name is itself vulgar, and even… Chum is her name, and the work is in Gangubai Kathiawadi.”

After going to town over the matter, the National Commission for Women (NCW) decided to summon Elvish Yadav for his unacceptable remarks. Last April, meeting with the NCW, he made a formal apology.

Afterwards, Elvish spoke to the media to clarify his intentions, saying, “As we grow in life and age, maturity follows.” ‘Chum’ comment… many people misunderstood my intentions. I agree, if people are hurt by my statements, then I must have said something wrong,” he had gone on to say. “I also profusely apologised to everyone inside, most of all to Chum Darang. Nor do I hold on any grudge with her.”

Chum is the only one he has beef with, and he regrets his words, but he said he has no personal issue with Chum. Elvish apologised to everyone hurt by his remarks, and he hoped their future interactions with him would be more sensitive and mature.
