Indian Space Research Organisation ISRO completed the second docking of satellites in its pioneering SpaDeX (Space Docking Experiment) mission. The latest docking on Monday was carried out with that report, according to Union Minister Jitendra Singh, sharing that development via X social media.
As elaborated before, the PSLV-C60/SpaDeX mission was successfully launched on 30 December 2024. After that, it was successful in its first docking on 16 January 2025 at 06:20 AM and undocking on 13 March 2025 at 09:20 AM. Singh said further experiments will be done over the next two weeks.
India’s space technology capability gets a big boost with the launch of the SpaDeX mission to the International Space Station on the PSLV-C60 rocket on December 30, 2024. The two experimental satellites placed on orbit during the launch were known collectively as SDX01 and SDX02 and were launched to demonstrate autonomous docking procedures in space. In this complex manoeuvre, two orbiting satellites approach one another, physically connecting to each other without human intervention, and it is a critical capability for future space operations such as on-orbit servicing, refuelling and deep space missions.
Second docking too is successful and second validation of Isro’s technology and second proof of India’s ability to undertake such sophisticated in-orbit operations. It also helps define more forward-looking goals in space infrastructure and exploration.
The introduction continues in the coming two weeks, ISRO will conduct additional experiments relevant to the SpaDeX mission. They will most likely test the reliability and durability of docking mechanisms to be used in future systems, and refine autonomous systems. The SpaDeX mission represents a step towards the development of advanced space infrastructure and the support of future space station projects as well as interplanetary missions.
