Mohammed Al-Khulaifi, Qatar chief negotiator, has voiced increasing frustration over the lack of progress made in ceasefire talks to end the war in Gaza. Al Khulaifi spoke to a news agency and criticised the slow pace of talks, in particular since the Israeli military strikes have resumed in the region since last month.

“We are very pissed off about the slowness sometimes of the negotiation process. This is an urgent matter. This military operation must stop day by day, and there are lives at stake here,” he stressed, adding that the fast track of the diplomatic progress is very needed here.

In early March, a truce agreement between Israel and Hamas fell apart in the first of what Israel claimed would be phases leading to a deal, though both sides failed to agree on a lasting solution. Since then, there has been little progress to reestablish a ceasefire drawn in with major international mediation.

During his remarks, Al-Khulaifi stressed that Qatar and the United States, along with Egypt, have been earnestly trying to return both sides to the negotiating table. “We had been continuously working to bring the parties together and revive the agreement that has been endorsed by the two sides,” he said.

However, Al-Khulaifi said Qatar would continue to participate in the mediation process despite the obstacles it was facing and the fact that ‘so far there is not much tangible breakthrough’. He also added that they are committed to continuing ‘in spite of the difficulties’.

Qatar’s role as a mediator has, however, been criticised by Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Yet, the Gulf nation remains a key player in international efforts to help bring the bloody conflict to an end by de-escalation and a long-term ceasefire in the war-torn region.
