Had the fortunes of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) been different a couple of times in the last few days of IPL 2025, their ‘El Clasico’ might also have become an ‘L Clasico,’ with what became of both sides a few days back. Luckily, for both teams, the skids had been scraped at just the right time ahead of another heady encounter. Having snapped a five-match losing streak, CSK will now try to enhance the momentum with a win over MI at the Wankhede on Sunday evening.

However, CSK may take a tinge of confidence in the fact that their earlier victory over MI in the season was played out at Chepauk. The Mumbai side, however, is a completely different unit. Key players like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah have also returned, which has given the team new life. MI were very impressive to turn things around very quickly as they have suffered two early defeats and now have back-to-back wins, home and away, adapting to different conditions and situations, be it defending a total or chasing one down.

The rest of the batting has been in good form, but the concern about Rohit Sharma’s dip in form continues. The top order is scoring fluently, the middle order has found boundaries at regular intervals, their bowling attack featuring all international players has begun to come into some rhythm, providing an emphatic win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

In contrast, CSK are still, in truth, trying to get its best combination together. However, their bowling was promising against LSG, but their batting lineup is inconsistent. Coach Stephen Fleming says he will turn to younger players, with several senior players underperforming. CSK would hope for a complete performance going into the big clash at Wankhede and keep their playoff hopes alive.
