Imphal: Seven of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmakers met Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Thursday. On the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the state, the community spokesperson voiced the concerns the delegation was raising in regards to the hardships faced by displaced communities, also appealing for the restoration of free traffic movement on the state’s highways.

Participating in the meeting were RK Imo, Dialgam Deben, Dinganglung Gangmei, Sapam Ranjan, K Ibomcha, Karam Shyam and Sapam Kunjakeswor or Keba. MLA Usham Deben stated that after the meeting, the delegation had informed the Governor to apprise him of the current situation in Manipur and the need to take steps to restore normalcy and peace there.

We met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to apprise him of the Manipur crisis and to urge the government to break the stranglehold of the ongoing crisis and restore peace in Manipur. In addition, we mentioned the difficulties encountered by internally displaced persons (IDPs), particularly in finishing construction of houses at safe locations, as many of the houses were destroyed during the unrest. We also urged the Governor to make sure that highway traffic in Manipur remains free for commuters, said Deben to a news agency.

This meeting between the BJP delegation and the Governor follows two days after 16 civil society organisations, made up of the People’s Progressive Alliance Manipur (PPAM), appealed to the state to form a government within a week. The BJP MLAs, however, did not offer any comment on the PPAM’s demand and if the meeting was triggered by it.

From February, Manipur has been under President’s Rule after the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The Supreme Court issued a directive for a forensic investigation against him after he allegedly confessed in leaked audio tapes to having instigated ethnic violence in the state.
