National Herald money laundering case is an act of blatant robbery, BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra said, terming Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi as “modern dacoits”. The remarks were made during a press conference on Thursday after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) chartered part of its chargesheet against him in the case earlier this week. The charge sheet lists Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, Sam Pitroda, Suman Dubey, and some other people and firms.
Patra questioned the financial transaction between the Congress party, Young Indian, and Associated Journals Limited (AJL): “Can a political party behave like a bank? How does it operate if a party of donors lends money to another entity? This is not theft or corruption; this is out and out robbery.” He demanded that the issue be referred to as the “National Herald robbery case from now on.”
It involves the top Congress leaders and other companies accused of being behind financial misdeeds. The arguments are scheduled to take place in court on April 25.
The Congress party, however, has strongly denied all allegations, saying it was politically motivated, and the charge sheet was part of a larger vendetta by Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s government. The party has vowed to mobilize a national protest against what it says amounts to ‘targeted harassment’ of its top leadership.
The Congress has asked all general secretaries, in-charges, and heads of frontline organisations to meet on Saturday to strategize their next steps. The party wants to drum up public support and stake out an opinion that this is an assault on democratic institutions and an assault on opposition voices.
