The Supreme Court is set to hear on Wednesday (April 16, 2025) a batch of petitions, including those by different political parties in India, against the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The six BJP-ruled States — Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Assam — have filed separate pleas highlighting the potential administrative and legal ramifications if the Waqf (Amendment) Act is struck down or altered.

The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on April 3, 2025, with 288 members supporting it and 232 against it, and in the Rajya Sabha on April 4 2025, with 128 members voting in favour and 95 opposing.

A three-judge Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Sanjay Kumar and K.V. Viswanathan, so far, listed 10 petitions on the issue.

Leaders from political parties like the AIMIM, the AAP, the TMC, the DMK, the TVK, the YSRCP, the CPI and the RJD are some of those who filed petitions against the Bill. On April 7, a Bench headed by the CJI assured senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, to consider listing the petitions.
